The Sickle Cell Disease Walk-A-Thon in Memphis originated in 2007. It has been developed to create a greater awareness in the Memphis community of Sickle Cell Disease and to raise money for patient care, social services, and research. All proceeds from the Walk-A-Thon will directly benefit people living with Sickle Cell. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals living with this debilitating disease.
AC Wharton
Shelby County Mayor
“Sickle Cell Disease affects thousands of individuals each year in the United States but the actual figure has a far greater impact beyond those born with the disease. Family members, extended family members, friends, and care-takers are often directly and indirectly impacted when a loved one has the disease. Sickle Cell knows no boundaries, and as a genetic condition with no cure currently available, it needs much more funding and research. A universal cure is a must. Let’s work together to ensure that fewer and fewer people born with Sickle Cell Disease become lifers, life long carriers of the disease. Thank you for caring enough to give freely of your time, your energy, and your funds.”
Lois DeBerry
2008 Sickle Cell Walk-A-Thon Steering Committee Chair
“It is my pleasure to serve as the chairperson for the 2008 Sickle Cell Walk-A-Thon Steering Committee, and I want to thank you for your support in this year’s walk. Sickle Cell Disease infects hundreds of people in our community alone, but it affects thousands. This year, we want to heighten the awareness of sickle cell while also raising funds to support those with this debilitating disease. We need you to join in with hundreds of others in our community to support this year’s Walk-A-Thon. Through your support, people living with sickle cell can receive the needed care and treatments to help them improve their quality of life.”
